The Australian Bureau of Statistics states that almost 4 million people in Australia reported avoiding a food type because of allergy or intolerance.

Furthermore, the ABS also state that Australia and New Zealand have among the highest prevalence of allergic disorders in the developed world.

Below is a list of symptoms that may be related to allergy or intolerance are:

  • Digestive issues like bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, nausea, cramps, pain, gas.
  • Face – dark circles under the eyes, puffiness, pale colour or flushing.
  • Swollen glands.
  • Flu like symptoms that last for long periods of time.
  • Excessive perspiration.
  • Low grade fever.
  • Sinus and hay fever.
  • Asthma and eczem
  • Nose – blocked nose, watery nose, sneezing, rubbing of the nose.
  • Bladder – urgency to urinate, burning or pain on urination, wetting pants through the day.
  • Ear – ringing in the ear, blocked ears or fluid build up, dizziness.
  • Aching – in the head, back, neck, muscles or joints (unrelated to exercise or exertion)
  • Chronic inflammation.
  • Difficulty losing weight.

Allergy and intolerances may also be at the root of those that suffer with learning disabilities along with other behavioural, physiological, emotional or neurological issues.

Other nervous system symptoms that may also relate to allergy or intolerance are:

  • Digestive issues like bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, nausea, cramps, pain, gas.
  • Face – dark circles under the eyes, puffiness, pale colour or flushing.
  • Swollen glands.
  • Flu like symptoms that last for long periods of time.
  • Excessive perspiration.
  • Low grade fever.

When allergies or intolerances are an issue your digestive system can be a factor to consider.

The American Gut Project – the world’s largest open source science project seeking to understand the microbial diversity of the human gut found that reduced richness and altered composition (dysbiosis) was also found to be the case with all allergies except asthma, bee sting, and eczema.

The dysbiosis was most prevalent with allergies to nuts and seasonal pollen.

Potential problems can arises when undigested food particles pass inappropriately through a compromised intestinal wall (leaky gut syndrome) and may become antigens where your immune system starts to target them.

With a healthy gut microbiome and intestinal wall this should not happen.

Re establishing the gut and digestive system health may beneficial for long-term management of allergy and intolerance.
